Most surprisingly good concert you've been to?
I saw (and photographed) St. Lucia at this past Firefly, and not knowing much about them, was very impressed by their performance. I also saw The Snails, a group featuring members of Future Islands, and they were outrageously fun and had these wonderful homemade snail costumes.
Anybody else? Or inversely, anybody you saw who you thought was going to be a lot better?
I saw future islands a few years ago sam herring puts on an incredible show, no surprise.
Any rap show ive ever been to aside from jay z was a serious let down lol
Had to cover this one show by a DC rapper named Yung Gleesh (not sure of dude's notability outside the area) plus a bunch of other DMV rappers on the same bill and it was HYPE. It was pretty standard fare until the end of the first opener -- this kid randomly jumps up out of the crowd and yells "Turn up! Turn up! Turn up!" His posse of friends then make this moshpit that stays active here and there throughout the show. Gleesh somehow managed to bring (what must've been) his entire squad on stage and be engaging. Far doper than I expected.
@rahischillin gleesh is fye!
first time i saw jazz cartier live i had no idea who he was and he blew me and my homies away
Not that I should have been surprised, but Hudson Mohawke 3ish years ago. It was in this grimy basement venue in Vancouver. The walls had a sheen due to the humidity in the underground space. But damn, when he dropped "Blood on the Leaves," it was insane. Really cool intimate experience.
I saw Grimes at Outside Lands a few weeks ago. I didn't have any expectations coming in so I can't say it was exactly "surprising" but she put on a hell of a show. Tons of energy and charisma, refreshing mixes, choreo, and she played and tweaked her synths 👌👌👌
