Producers - Where did you learn about mixing?
I'm an emcee that's started to get into producing my own instrumentals and I was wondering how y'all learned about mixing. In terms of its technical side, I was wondering if anyone can link some youtube tutorials, e-books, or articles they've found useful?
I'm not the greatest producer, but I remember this graphic helping me a lot early on in terms of spreading out the different song elements:
This video was also helpful when I started learning about mastering:
And I just remembered that I wrote about this free 100-page PDF production guide from a legendary ghost producer for P&P last year, so grabbing that might be a good idea. http://pigeonsandplanes.com/news/2015/12/legendary-ghost-producer-tips-guide
@Sentient-B trial & error. very stressful but fun
One tip that I dont see people really talk about, maybe its just more nuanced seasoned approach, is mixing also includes eq shelfs. It's more than volume, panning, and compression. Find out the eq range to every instrument, including the varying degrees of vocals, and make sure they're occupying the correct shelf.
After the technical aspect of production is under yr belt, recording and producing is all about making choices. These choices either help the material communicate or they dont.
or they don't.
